Playa Hearth Stop for BORG2 Zone

Short Description of Artwork

They say “it’s just a week in the desert”. And this project is just four sheets of ply around a discarded oil drum. Everything else will be in your twisted psyche, and mine. Ready to play make believe in the sandbox? It’s been a while…

Complete Description of Artwork

In some unknown way, the psyche is transformed at Burning Man by connecting it with art, fire, and community. The Playa Hearth Stop project stimulates those connections by establishing intimate neighborhood meeting points for participants to congregate and make new friends as they create art and fire together. Want to have a cool playhouse in the world’s biggest sandbox? It’s so easy, and will cost a ridiculously cheap $150. Use the BORG2 Playa Hearth Stop as the psyche suggests – village rendezvous point, art car stop, deep playa contemplation, dust storm shelter, theatre, passionate connections, or …?

Each Playa Hearth Stop consists of a burn barrel or other fire piece surrounded by four wooden Playa Love Seats to define the space. A conceptual rendering is shown, less fire piece. Each four foot wide Playa Love Seat is easily cut from a single 4×8 1/2” plywood sheet in under an hour pre-playa. It fits in a small car as six flat pieces, and assembles on-site in seconds using slots in the parts, without tools, fasteners or glue. Cost is about $30/seat. The bulk of the playa effort is securing each seat with one rebar and then stoking the fire!

This proposal aims to fund a Playa Hearth Stop in the BORG2 zone, and maybe connect it to other Playa Hearth Stops using high-speed transportation modalities should I feel like it. At least I’ll tell Playa Info its real location. The budget covers the materials cost of four Playa Love Seats, which will be lovingly handcrafted by the artist using a big-ass saw and carefully assembled in a location designated by BORG2. Some paints will also be provided at the site, so art can be painted on the Playa Love Seats by participants in the morning, and baked by the hot sun for seat use that night while the community shares a fire. If you want to glue fur on it and snuggle, do so at your own risk.

I will be camping elsewhere and involved with other art projects, and this is Burning Man so if you want a sweet spot to entertain in the middle of nowhere you damn well better make it happen yourself! Therefore other BORG2 participants will need to provide and maintain the fire piece or burn barrel and fill out whatever forms that needs (you’d need to do that anyway, ya?). BORG2 participants can either burn the Playa Love Seats at the end of the event or ship them flat back to default should they survive (fat chance in this neighborhood).

Clean Up Plan

You’re kidding, right? I create four amazingly cool and terrifically useful works of art in the BORG2 zone for a few rolls of pennies, and after you destroy them you want me to clean up??!! Tell you what – I’ll promise to show up around three days into the event and take whatever is left of the paints away. Just don’t spill any because the playa might glow for years.
